It is a fact of life that many of the greatest advances in science occur as a result of warfare, and it is no coincidence that the advances in the use of antibiotics was spurred on by the two world wars of the 20th century. Discoveries made during and after these disasters have not only enabled many millions of people to survive injuries that would otherwise have proved fatal to them, but they have also extended life expectation generally.

Typically, a rehabilitation project will be led by a physiatrist who will assess the patient and make a judgement as to just how much improvement that patients could expect from physical therapy alone. Skilled therapists would then help and encourage the patient to improve mobility and reduce pain as much as possible. Where complete recovery is not possible a physical rehabilitation engineer, can then be called in to design or create artificial aids which will benefit that patient. Nurses will monitor the patient throughout to ensure that general health is maintained, and often a psychiatric practitioner will assist the patient to cope with the possibility of depression or other mental issues which were connected to the cause of the disability. Where possible, occupational advisors may assist patients in the choice of a future career.
